What Experience Made Them Have Problems?
Any loss or traumatic experience can give any troop or anyone PTSD or a reaction to resulting from these losses or experiences. The troops have a number of reasons as to why they could be affected. The fact of being in a war is enough to set off a reaction resulting in PTSD like symptoms or worse.
Here are some the reasons listed as to why a soldier could have been affected because not all troops had these problems:

-Being shot at by the enemy
-Losing a friend in battle
-Being wounded and feeling helpless
-The fact of being in a war -Losing a limb -Having seen or witnessed a war crime
-Feeling cowardly
-Seeing a disturbing sight
-Having to kill someone
-Killing someone
- And More
There were many other ways that could have set off PTSD or similar symptoms in the troops. Whilst some could be cured, others would have been more difficult to treat. The things that may set off psychological problems in the troops would have varied because they were all different, different things would have set some people off and others were there to survive and didn't have to suffer through it.(Melinda Smith,M.A., Jeanne Segal, Ph.D., 2013)
