How is the AIF Related to the Trenches?
The AIF was established really as a fighting unit. There was a total of five units but two of the units were mounted (horseback riders). As the AIF was a fighting unit, they were sent out to the front line of the trench warfare in this case it was the Western Front. These troops that were on the front line had fought many battles in defending and attacking the opposition which was the Germans. The AIF, British and French troops were on the front line and were intended to draw the Germans away from attacking the French positions at Verdun."(First Australian Imperial Force, 2013)(1st Australian Imperial Force) (Robert Darlington, History Alive 9, 2012)
